Thai lawmakers propose stricter regulations on cannabis.

Thai lawmakers continue to push for a comprehensive law on the use of cannabis for medical and research purposes. According to these authorities, a large amount of green gold has been legalized in the country without proper regulations.

Last year, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to decriminalize cannabis. However, very little time has been spent on regulations and measures regarding its use.

New cannabis legislation

The new law will target an industry expected to be worth $1.2 billion over the next few years, with cannabis stores popping up in the capital, Bangkok, and tourist hotspots such as the resort island of Phuket.

“Cannabis will be for medical and research purposes,” said Saritpong Kiewkong of the Bhumjaithai Party, which spearheaded decriminalization and is now the second-largest party in Thailand’s coalition government of 16 parties.

There is currently no sound policy for recreational use. That creates strange situations. The bill is expected to take a year to be finalized and passed. It covers, among other things, permits for cultivation, sale and distribution of plants and stricter measures against sales in temples, schools, and amusement parks.
