The export of Portuguese cannabis is rapidly increasing.
The medical cannabis business has grown a lot this year. Last year, Portugal sold about 10 tons of green gold abroad.
According to the National Health Service (SNS), last year the volume of exports increased by 63 percent. This year, more than five tons were sold in the first half of the year alone. A new export record is expected to be reached by the end of 2023.
Medical cannabis customers
The main customers are Germany, Poland and Australia. Israel was the largest buyer in 2020. Spain imported almost 2,900 tons of medical cannabis from Portugal last year. According to Infarmed data, 76 final permits for four types of cannabis businesses (cultivation, import-export, manufacturing and wholesale) had been issued at the close of the first half of the year.
