How does CBD alleviate menopausal symptoms?
Many of the negative symptoms associated with menopause (increased stress, lack of sleep, joint pain, headaches, and anxiety) are said to be relieved by CBD. So it is not surprising that the two are associated with each other.
Currently, there is limited scientific research supporting the links between CBD and relief from menopausal symptoms, although some studies have found it effective for pain relief in general. However, most of the evidence available is anecdotal.
Hot flashes and anxiety.
Dr. Shirin Lakhani, an expert in intimate health and menopause, suggests that “while research is ongoing, there is some evidence that cannabidiol may be beneficial for women’s health. Research indicates that it may reduce hot flashes and night sweats, as well as assisting with mood swings, irritability, and fatigue.”
Jon Robson, the founder of Mamedica, the UK’s leading medical cannabis clinic, agrees, particularly when it comes to addressing symptoms such as hot flashes and anxiety. He explains, “A study published in 2018 in the journal Gynecological Endocrinology discovered that CBD was effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of hot flashes in menopausal women. Another study, published in 2020 in the journal Maturitas, found CBD to be effective in improving sleep and reducing anxiety in women during this stage of their lives.”
CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in regulating various physiological processes, including mood, sleep, and stress responses. CBD can help regulate the ECS and reduce anxiety by activating serotonin receptors in the brain.
Discuss complaints with a healthcare provider.
While CBD might offer benefits for menopausal women, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider. CBD has the potential to interact with other medications or have other potential side effects. For some individuals going through menopause or perimenopause, incorporating CBD into their routines has made a significant difference.
It is crucial to remember that any supplement or remedy should complement a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Lakhani recommends, “Ensuring adequate rest and following sleep routines is important, even if it is challenging due to menopausal insomnia.”
“I would also advise maintaining a healthy, balanced diet with calcium-rich foods to promote healthy bones. Additionally, I highly recommend mechanical lymphatic massage, which aids in detoxifying the body and can alleviate fluid retention, sluggishness, and mental fogginess.”
